Long time no post... I have had 0 time to even mess with SecondRun in the last few months... Things have been very busy for me at work and my kids have started up Pop Warner football again... time is just in short supply.  SecondRun doesn't pay the bills and is a hobby for me that costs me money just to keep up and running.  I just want to let everyone know that I have no intention of just dropping SecondRun... I am trying to find a good way for it to exist right now... there are several issues:

 

1.) With Hulu Desktop now available ALOT of what SecondRun does is redundent... Sure it is a native Media Center interface but Hulu Desktop has access to ALL of their content... without constant updates that just isn't possible for us to do here.

 

2.) We still can't play flash video over extenders... that just isn't happening anytime soon and there are not good work arounds either... so SecondRun will not be playing Hulu content on extenders unless something changes here.

 

I have a big update to the website done that will allow users to add networks and content that isn't available in the base content of SecondRun but that isn't fully tested yet... I can't release it without a good deal of testing so there are some big changes coming I just haven't had the time to make sure that they are working the way they need to be.

 

ALSO... with all the new shows and seasons starting up this week and the next few weeks I will be loading a bunch of new content into SecondRun... that new content will be up and ready by the end of the weekend. 

 

I hope to have an update of the app soon but all the new content will be coming by the end of the weekend time permitting.  Thanks to everyone who has supported this project and continues to support this project.  I will continue to look for ways to make SecondRun more unique and justify its existance outside of something like Hulu Desktop.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for features in SecondRun (other than extender support) feel free to drop them here.

I just wanted to post a quick note to let everyone know that I am still here and working on SecondRun but I have been really busy lately... kids are finishing up the school year and things have been busy at work... I just haven't had a ton of time to devote to SecondRun.

 

I will be posting a new build in a few days that hopefully will open up the app and allow users to add their own content to the system (private to their user)... I am still in the testing phases though.

I just wrote a quick plugin to allow you to launch the new Hulu Desktop application inside Media Center... Since Hulu Desktop works with a remote this will make it feel like it is just a Media Center application!

 

Sorry... it doesn't work on Extenders... Hulu Desktop was written completely in Flash and that doesn't work correctly on Extenders.

 

But hey... this will give everyone yet another way to watch Hulu stuff *inside* Media Center!

Many of you may have heard that Hulu just released their own desktop player!  Hulu Desktop!!! Check it out... Not sure what that means for us here but we will see! http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop

 

I update the content processors for Hulu today and pulled in 127 shows and several networks that were not yet available in SecondRun!  I will be working on processors for Sling and Fancast as well so we automatically get new content from those 2 providers as well.

 

There were also a bunch of new movies added... there are about 350 movies available right now!

 

I am also done with to coding side of the new update that will allow users to add their own content!  I just need to finish up the styling end of things now and we should be good to go with a new update.

Microsoft has built a real Netflix add on for Media Center!  It's supposed to be out already on Vista!!! Very cool...

 

Makes you wonder... if Hulu was kicking on Boxee because something like this might be in the works for Media Center.

Just wanted to drop everyone a quick update... I have a new build that I will be posting in a day or two... there wont be a ton of visible changes but this build will detect more types of directly playable content than the previous build.  It also preps the app for a new user feature that I am adding very soon... I am adding the ability for end users to add their own content!  This will mean you can add whatever podcasts, tv networks, etc you want to your setup!  It will be a web based system that allows you to login to our site and add your content there... you will get an "Access Code" to plug into your settings page that will tie your installation to your account on our site.  This will open up some pretty neat stuff in the future... we should have the ability to merge acceptable content from user accounts with the main listing of networks essentially allowing the entire community of SecondRun users to contribute to the collection of video that is available on the plugin!  I have an early implementation of this working already and should be having testers start using it pretty soon (like in a few days).

I setup a Twitter account today so anyone who wants to can follow development updates without contantly coming back to the website.  This will be a great way for people to stay on top of the latest developments!  I would also like to get an idea of how many people out there are really interested in the project... so if you have a Twitter account please sign up to follow the SecondRun updates!

 

There will be an update in the next few days... There will be PARTIAL extender support in this release... Now before everyone gets too excited... it is just extender support for providers that have mpg/wmv based content... There are only a couple of items out there right now... the best of which is Revision3's entire lineup.  No Hulu content or any of the other main networks on extenders just yet... This update also addresses the problem with the movies feature, it also deals with episode thumbs a little different so some of the sites that didn't show thumbs before now will... we have pretty much every thumb type accounted for now so it the site has thumbs in their feed you will see them.

 

I am still working on full extender support but we just are not there yet... I have a couple of different solutions that I am working on but none that are far enough along for anyone to get too excited yet.  The limited support coming in the next release will be such a big tease!  It works GREAT for the networks that provide non flash versions of their content!
